Hi everyone. I'm working on my next cataloging book(s) about West Virginia bottles, as well as an eventual website with all of the images and details, but I wanted to upgrade my photography setup prior to taking dedicated trips to large collections. Right now, I am planning on investing in a...
Hey! So, I started graduate school in Cincinnati a little over a month ago so I'm not constantly in WV. I do come home around every two weeks and I'd love to go digging this fall and winter. Shoot me a message and let me know where you're headed to and we can work something out!
Hi everyone, I recently published a rarity guide on all known West Virginia embossed and paper label crown top sodas. That includes local bottlers, Kola Wars sodas, straight-sided Coca-Colas, and pre-standard Pepsis. It has images for the bottles where possible. At 288 pages, that means nearly...
Hi Al, I'm sorry to hear about why you were in West Virginia. Those are definitely unfortunate circumstances.
I'd be very interested in you two coming to visit to go digging with me. The problem is that right now I don't have an area to dig at. When I do, you two will be the first to know...
Hi everyone, thanks so much for all of the input here. The river had counter-erosion measures taken, so now (and for the past few decades) there have been large boulders placed on the steep banks. I may just take a walk down by the waterline to see if I see anything sometime soon, but I believe...
Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on here in awhile. Conditions are murkier and muddier from the surface. Very steep banks with no way to get down to the water except by-way of the other river which connects to it. The water deepens quickly, from 2-3 feet to 8 feet within a couple yards...
Thanks guys. Unfortunately it's consistently too deep to wade and in an urban center. I'll look for a calmer area where they might have settled, wasn't sure of how they might get tossed around in there. It's a large river, definitely not walkable.
I posted once about a river near my home that is entirely undiveable--or only safe for trained search and recovery divers. There's a ton of boat traffic, a decent current, and very little visibility. Some people suggested getting a long clam rake and going out on a boat to scrape the bottom. I...
Hey everybody, I'm still looking for West Virginia bottles but I figured I'd make another listing. I'm looking for all West Virginia colas. This includes "copy cats" like Celery=Cola, Rye-Ola, Chero-Cola, Limeola, everything, straight sided Cokes and pre-standardization Pepsis. In addition, just...
How do I determine if the lip is ground? Around the lip (on the inside) the glass is rough and sticks inwards some. I wasn't sure if that was from the lid or manufacturing.
So, I've had this jar for probably ten-something years. I've never been big on jars so I've been trying to get rid of it, but I have no idea if it's real or not (I don't want to rip somebody off), as I read that a lot of reproductions were made in China in the 2010s. I can't find this exact...
Unfortunately not. Employment isn't the talk of the town in West Virginia right now--clam rakes and kayaks aren't too cheap! I have mapped a ton of places lately using KMZ overlays and historical documents in my time off, though. Waiting for the temperature to cool down so some of this...
