Yesterday I was invited to dig on a piece of property in old town Key West. This was by far the most awesome dig I have been on so far! There are 4 or 5 big trees in the yard and each one seems to be over a privy, only two holes have been opened so far. The first was 95% finished when I got there but I did find a local KW med bottle in there! Here are some pics of the first hole.

This is the second hole they opened up, this one has shelled out over a hundred bottle so far and it should still have 10 feet to go!
Last night we ran into an old wheel of some sort, now we have to make the opening bigger to get it out!!

Good luck! Can't wait to hear the rest of the story. A digger I broke in with a looooong time ago used to refer to those trees as s!*^ trees, because they'd take root over the spot where there was fertilizer (if you know what I mean).

We were talking about that last night! I asked if they planted the trees like that so they could mark the old privies or if it was just fertile ground!!

The ground wasn't as firm as other areas so trees could take root easier, the soil was usually more moist and the nutrients from the waste was food for the trees so it would be a common occurence for a tree to take root and to do well in such places Jay...

Now THAT is Hard Core privy digging to me. I have dug well over 100 privies but never UNDER a full size tree. Buildings, yes, but never a tree. Thanks for the show Jay, please keep the pix coming.

Go get em. Hope you score and be sure to post some bottle pics. Spent the day in Key West once, drove me crazy looking at all those old houses and thinking about all the privies that must be there.

I'll keep you guys posted if I get to go back. The dig is in a residential area of key west. It's also at one of the highest points on the island so there has been no water!! That is making things much easier, the last dig I was on the water was only 18" from the surface. This is the house next door, looks real promising!!
