I collect bottles, blue jeans and bandanas....
Bandanas originated as banners or flags....so I was told.
Teddy Roosevelt wore a bandana to symbolize his
regiment's colours of red and white. I love Teddy! BULLY!
So anyhooo...I was looking long and hard for an example
of a revolutionary flag, a war of 1812 flag and a civil war
flag. Found and sold all three. Unbelievable prices even
thirty years ago. My badly torn 1780 duster, my South
Carolina state flag from 1820 and my 17 star 9 stripe
Rebel Buster from 1864 all sold well. Paid for a vacation
to North Carolina in 2000!
I missed them of course but it was money well spent.
When I felt regretful I made replicas employing the techniques
of the day. Hand sewn with period materials was the only
way to go. I utilized only the proper warp of cotton thread
and period buntings to make hand stitched museum quality
replicas. My ancestors came to Colonial Canada via NY
and The Old South so I chose my flags carefully.
Can't wait to get a working camera. My wife is sleeping in so
I dare not ask her. Here is what they're based on.
1) Revolutionary Colonial Duster...
2) War of 1812 NY Cowpens Type Flag...
3) Civil War South Carolina Palmetto Type Flag ..
Some day I'll post actuals. If I didn't know better even I'd be fooled.
