Galveston Dig

Yeah...that company was around in the mid-1870's, so quite early. I really love the citrates and collect them from all of Texas (not that there are a ton of them). I also collect them from New Hampshire but I'm only aware of one from the entire state!

Went out for another dig a few weeks ago on a lot we've hit really hard. It is still turning up a few odds and ends though. Dug a great "Sweet Revenge" flask from Galveston, a couple interesting sauce bottles (Parisian Sauce and North of England Sauce), and a few other odds and ends. The sign would have been pretty awesome but unfortunately the paint just comes right off and the sign is not engraved or cut in-just reverse painted.

What a shame about that sign! I'd never heard of Red Raven Splits before, but it turns out they were a hangover remedy with some fantastic advertising:

Yep. Never seen the sign before and don't see any examples online, but we find the bottles all the time-they were VERY popular.

Went out Sunday...unfortunately the recent rain left the ground absolutely saturated and keeping holes open and clear of water was nearly impossible. Dug a few heartbreakers like this broken colored Galveston pharmacy bottle as well as a few whole sodas. Lots of poison bottles on this lot...no idea why but I've dug probably 50 of this same bottle on the lot.

Went out Sunday and happily the ground wasn't quite so wet. Dug a couple of big holes and had some luck...in a deep tiny pit I found two nice early hutch sodas from Galveston. Above that I found several poison bottles including this nice triangular one. In the second pit I found a couple pharmacy bottles (one damaged-this style is almost always cracked and fisheyed), a nice super early Galveston milk bottle, and way down and off to the side I found a nice early 1870's Udolpho Wolfe's in a great color. The sign would have been nice but it wasn't all there and is beyond repair. I believe it was a Lorillard's. Overall a good day and beautiful weather for digging!

Wow, nice haul and some decent age. I’ve a few of those parallelogram shaped poisons. Wonder what the poison was for? Any one know what its contents was used for?

Dug a new spot today and found some goodies. Everything was found in the top 8"-18" in a sparse trash layer. I think it was the interface between dredge material from raising the island and them bringing in top soil for lawns.

Galveston really hyped the oleanders. An unofficial moniker. You could buy post cards of the oleander lined streets to send back as souvenirs. I might have one. I'll post if I can track it down.
