Hi
On Saturday, I dug up this bottle at a very old cellar. From what I've read, it would be pre 1860 . I'm think medicine bottle but not sure. I'm fairly new to bottles this old, anyone have any ideas?

What else did you find in the cellar? Just curious, and maybe these could provide clues. The bottle could also be a late throw, something significantly older than the rest.

Looks like a two piece mold scar on the bottom, with an open pontil. I'd say 1810s-40s, leaning closer to the earlier side.

Didn't really get into to much digging, this was a back corner about 10 feet from the cellar. I was metal detecting and had a signal last year and dug up some broken plates. I ended up digging a small 3 by 2 section with a hand digger and foot long probe. The china is ironwork I believe by a partial backmark. Only the first intact but found pieces of others.

That's a standard blacking or boot polish bottle for sure.Classic dimensions for this type. Really old too probably 1830s to 50s. If that was whole there could be more great stuff in that little dumping area. I dug a few broken over the years so nice to see one pop out intact. Great find! Johnny M.

It looks like some of those feather edged plates are from the mid 1800s. I’d suggest digging more here, bottles and plates this old are pretty hard to find!!

That sharp part on the bottom is called an open pontil scar, from where the glass blower would have cracked it off the rod that was holding it during the manufacturing process. This technique of bottle making was already being phased out (in the USA) around the 1850's, so your bottle is most likely from the pre-civil war era. Very neat! And believe it or not some countries, such as France, continued to make utilitarian bottles with this technique through as late as the 1870's!

I agree with others here. Based on the rough, open pontil scar you are in an 1840s to 1850s dump site . Keep digging down until you hit no more bottles or broken glass and out in all four directions until you hit no broken glass. Hang onto the plates and stoneware food containers. They can be good for display, local history, trade or sell.
